ATV – All-Terrain Vehicle. Commonly refers to 3 (trike) or 4-wheeled (quad) vehicles that travel on low-pressure tires with a seat that is straddled by the operator. They are designed to handle a wider variety of terrain than other OHVs due to their smaller size and lighter weight. This also includes 6 or 8 wheeled vehicles that, although are not straddled by the operator, are still light but more amphibious and are now commonly known as AATVs or Amphibious All-Terrain Vehicles.

HRTA – Halifax Regional Trails Association. Sometimes pronounced “Har taa”. An umbrella group representing a wide range of Community Trail Groups throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality. The primary purpose is to promote the development and wise use of trails for the benefit of HRM, other Nova Scotians and visitors.

LOA – Letter of Authority. In this specific case, an LOA is an official document from the Department of Natural Resources, the owner of the old rail bed property, that gives permission for the community organization to develop the trail.

NW – Navigable Waters. A body of water that is navigable if it is deep, wide and slow enough for a specified vessel to pass and there are no obstructions that could be of a danger to the vessel.

OHV – Off-Highway Vehicle. Typically refers to any vehicle, that may or may not, be street-legal and is driven off-road such as 4-wheel-drive pick-ups, jeeps and all terrain vehicles.
